Ad-Aware is an anti-spyware program developed by Lavasoft that detects and removes spyware or adware on a user’s computer. It also detects other malware, including dialers, Trojans, viruses, bots, rootkits, data miners, aggressive advertising, parasites, browser hijackers, and tracking components.

Lavasoft offers a free, downloadable version called Ad-Aware 2008 Free, and three paid-for products called Ad-Aware 2008 Plus, Ad-Aware 2008 Pro and Ad-Aware Enterprise 2.0. With the 2008 release, the Plus and Pro products include integrated anti-virus protection.

Ad-Aware was originally developed in late 1998 to highlight web beacons inside of Internet Explorer. On almost every website you would see tiny pixelated square next to each web beacon. This was to warn you that your IP address and other non-essential information was being tracked by this website. Over time they added the ability to block those beacons, or ads. Ad-Aware no longer makes you aware of the ads on your screen, instead the programs fights spyware and malware.[citation needed]

Ad-Aware 2008 does not support Windows 98 or ME; previous versions did support these older versions of Windows.

foobar2000 is a freeware audio player for Windows developed by Peter Pawlowski, a former freelance contractor for Nullsoft. It is known for its highly customizable interface. It has many features for metadata support and high-quality audio output. To maximize the audio fidelity of consumer-grade equipment, it provides noise shaping and dithering. It features a number of official and third-party components which add many additional features. While the core is closed source, the author provides an extensive SDK under the BSD license. Since version 0.9.5, foobar2000 supports Windows XP and later releases only. This version features a revamped default interface, with embedded support for album list, album art, spectrum visualization, and some other features and improvements.

The name foobar is derived from the common placeholder name used in computer programming.

XnView is highly customisable and multi-lingual, supporting 44 languages in the Windows version. The language can be changed via the options menu. The toolbar buttons can be modified to a certain extent, or be replaced by altering skins.

Also, XnView has been able to support more and more file formats (mainly image file formats). It can read more than 400 image file formats, some audio and video file formats, and write 50 image file formats. XnView also supports ICC profiles in JPEG, PNG and TIFF files.

XnView can show IPTC, Exif and XMP metadata, and write IPTC metadata (but cannot do batch writing of IPTC metadata, and some users are longing for the batch IPTC editing function). A further limitation is that it currently does not allow to sort thumbnails within a folder by a user-defined order.

XnView can search files that have the same filename or data, and can search for similar graphics as well.

In addition, the display of the histogram of a picture is possible (IrfanView does not have this function). And within a few mouse clicks, scripts can be created to convert, manipulate and rename a batch of images in one go.

Several image editing tools are included, for instance color and size manipulation, several filters and effects (full version even includes Harry’s Filters 3.0). Lossless (without new encoding) turning, flipping and cropping of JPEG files is supported. Creation of advanced slideshows is possible as well. Furthermore, it can upload images to an FTP site or ImageShack, burn images to a CD or DVD (Nero Burning ROM required) with a few clicks (full version only).

XnView is accompanied by NConvert, a command line image conversion tool.

Songbird is a free software media player and web browser developed as open source by a group known as Pioneers of the Inevitable (with members who previously developed for both Winamp[1] and the Yahoo! Music Engine), with a stated mission “to incubate Songbird, the first Web player, to catalyze and champion a diverse, open Media Web.”[2]

Songbird employs Mozilla’s XULRunner platform, and is thus capable of running on Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, Solaris and Linux. On the Windows and Macintosh platforms, Songbird utilizes the VideoLAN Client for media playback. For Linux & Solaris, Songbird uses the GStreamer media framework instead of VideoLAN. FrostWire is a peer-to-peer file sharing program for the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. FrostWire is written in Java, and is a fork of LimeWire, another popular Gnutella client. Released under the GNU General Public License, FrostWire is free software.

The project was started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open source community, after LimeWire’s distributor considered placing “blocking” code, which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action, in light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing licensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005 . Starting from version 4.13.1.7, Public Service Announcements can be found on the Community Chat tab.

As with LimeWire, FrostWire is in Java, and therefore is capable of supporting multiple platforms. While LimeWire is available in both free and paid versions, FrostWire is released only as a free version. The FrostWire program includes all of the functionalities of LimeWire’s free version, as well as a few features of LimeWire Pro’s payment based upgrades. FrostWire also provides a chatroom, which is absent in LimeWire. FrostWire’s interface is nearly identical to that of LimeWire’s, since it is based on the same code base. However, the color scheme is slightly different. As in LimeWire, FrostWire’s skin may be changed to a variety of different colors and shapes.
